Ben Howard // Passenger [cover] Bruce Springsteen — MIMFL Cover Songs (Vol. 3)

Alrighty, darlings. It’s week 3. Well Volume 3, I guess — I didn’t post last week. Since I’m just testing this whole cover song series out, I thought I’d see how it felt to skip a week. And you know what? It felt great! 😉 I think bi-weekly will work well for me. This week is sort of a double feature. BOOM! I couldn’t decide which artist’s cover to share. So, you get both. I would like to ask that you don’t compare and contrast, why do we do that?  Just let go and enjoy.

Cover songs are often a controversial topic among music lovers. I see both sides of the topic, but I myself am very PRO-cover. Inspiration is found in nature, in a kind word, in a thoughtfully penned poem, in the laughter of children. Different things inspire different people at different times, but I think music is universally the most inspirational medium. Musicians who are just starting out hone their craft by learning covers that inspire them, songs originally played by people they admire. I love that! I love the respect and reverence you can hear in a thoughtfully done cover. I especially adore it when a song is reworked and has new life breathed into it. [original source]

I happen to positively adore both of these gentlemen. As you know, Ben Howard is no stranger to this blog. He made my Favorite Finds of 2011, he was the highlight of my SxSW this past year and yes, I saw him as many times as I possibly could while he was touring in the states. (How many times you ask? Five times in seven months. Twice in Texas, then Boston, then Portland, then Boulder.) So yes, I’m a fan. But what you don’t know is that I’ve been listening to Passenger since 2008. I own every album he’s made and his album, Wicked Man’s Rest, is one of my most-played/all-time-favorite albums, EVER. Mike Rosenberg is brilliant. I apologize that his first introduction to these pages is with a cover song. I beg of you — check him out for yourself.

With no further ado, and in no particular order —

And while I think both of these versions are smashing, nobody does it like the Boss. I can’t even begin to tell you how huge my smile gets while watching this video.
